OUR FARM
From the first vines planted in 1726, to the cessation of 30 years of fruit, vegetable and grape production, to the innovative vineyard replanting programme in the late 1990s which optimised the farm’s inherent qualities, the complexity of our wines is rooted in earthy simplicity.
Strong reddish clay and decomposing granite combine to produce soil that facilitates slow-growing vines and small berries rich in pigment and flavour. Planted east to west on predominantly north-facing slopes, our vines soak in the full benefit of the South African sun. Cool south-westerly breezes from the nearby ocean provide ideal conditions for the slow ripening of the grapes and an abundance of varietal flavour.
With the benefit of satellite surveys and soil analyses to identify the unique micro-climatic conditions on the farm’s slopes, we plant only grape varietals suited to the terroir. White wine varietals include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Viognier and Chardonnay. Red wine varietals include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage, Petit Verdot, Mourvèdre and Pinot Noir. |
